Genuine Undead is more than a 9,999-piece pixel art collection. It is a living experiment in art, community, ownership and decentralization.
Created by an anonymous artist and released on Ethereum in August 2022 as a free mint, Genuine Undead began without the machinery that usually surrounds an NFT project: no traditional corporate team, no elaborate marketing campaign, no predetermined roadmap and no promise that a centralized organization would build the future for its holders.
There was simply the art.
9,999 unique 24×24 pixel artworks, created from more than 200 hand-drawn traits, with an extraordinary attention to colour, shading, depth and composition.
But the real story of Genuine Undead began after the collection was released.
The artist created it. The community took the reins.
The founder chose to remain anonymous and allowed the project to evolve around the people who believed in it.
The Green Papers became an important philosophical foundation for the community, expressing ideas around decentralization, ownership and the principle that:
"The Community is the Utility."
Then came a defining moment in GU history.
The artist gave half of the project's royalties to the community, directing them to the community treasury. The founder also gifted the legendary Nature to the community.
This fundamentally changed the relationship between artist and collectors.
The community was no longer simply supporting the artist's work.
It had a direct stake in the future of the project.
From that point forward, Genuine Undead increasingly became something that could not be controlled or defined by a single individual.
A decentralized community with a structure
As the community grew, people began taking responsibility for different aspects of the ecosystem.
Councils emerged to coordinate initiatives, make decisions and bring together people with different skills and areas of expertise.
Artists, developers, writers, collectors, entrepreneurs and builders all contributed in their own ways.
This created something very different from the traditional NFT model:
there is no single person whose presence is necessary for Genuine Undead to exist.
The project was created by one anonymous artist, but its continuity is carried by a decentralized network of people.
Legions
The philosophy of community ownership eventually evolved into new forms of collective organization.
GU Legions allow members to organize themselves into smaller groups, coordinate resources and experiment with collective ownership, collaboration and decision-making. Legions were created by @taokoltes.
Among the Legions, Legion V stands out as the most powerful, holding close to 100 Genuine Undead on its own.
Legions represent the philosophy of decentralization at a more granular level:
people do not have to wait for a central team to build something for them. They can organize and build it themselves.
A community-owned cultural infrastructure
Over time, Genuine Undead developed infrastructure that extends far beyond the original collection.
The Genuine Undead Gallery became an immersive metaverse space dedicated to the history and culture of the project - bringing together art, writings, characters, community creations and important moments in GU history.
The project also established a legal structure around Genuine Undead Holdings Inc. and the Genuine Art Foundation, creating a framework for protecting and managing the Genuine Undead intellectual property and trademarks, owned and fully controlled by the community in the pure decentralized way.
This is an important distinction.
Community ownership is not simply a slogan within GU.
It has progressively been reflected in the project's governance, legal structure and technical infrastructure.
V1 → V2 → V3
The evolution of Genuine Undead can also be seen directly on-chain.
V1 is the original collection created by the anonymous artist in 2022 - the historical foundation of everything that followed.
V2 represented a major technical and organizational evolution, introducing a community-controlled smart contract and new technical capabilities while preserving the history and provenance of the original collection.
V3 continues this evolution, with the goal of bringing the collection and its infrastructure into another chapter of community-controlled development. V3 has recovered the collection's full historical volume since the original free mint - more than 15,000 ETH traded across its history - alongside a series of major upgrades: full independence from any external dev dependency, royalties locked at 5% (adjustable), all V2-only traits removed in favor of the original trait set, every Genuine Undead now Engraved, the art fully on-chain as SVG, and every Undeadz paired with its corresponding GU.
The important point is that each version is part of the history.
Genuine Undead does not simply replace its past.
It builds on it.
A living cultural project
This is ultimately what makes Genuine Undead different from a conventional NFT collection.
The artist created the original universe.
The community adopted it.
The community organized itself.
It created Councils and Legions.
It built infrastructure.
It established legal ownership.
It created galleries, media, businesses and new creative projects.
And it continued to evolve the technology behind the collection.
Genuine Undead is therefore not a finished product.
It is a living cultural project whose direction is shaped by the people who participate in it.

Genuine Undead is an Incubator for Talents
One of the most remarkable things Genuine Undead has created is not another NFT.
It has created creators.
From its earliest days, Genuine Undead became a place where people could experiment, collaborate and develop their own creative identities.
Art was never meant to be something that holders simply consumed.
The community encouraged people to draw, write, build, experiment and create.
Over time, this produced something rare:
a genuine creative ecosystem in which members could develop their own artistic careers and independent universes.
From community member to creator
The GU ecosystem has become a fertile ground for artists working across very different mediums and styles.
Among the creators connected to this culture are GIMIKS, Markus Manson, Unicode, Coso, Sygo, Herb and Shepherd Vito, among many others.
Their work is important not simply because they are talented artists.
It demonstrates something deeper about Genuine Undead:
the community can be a starting point for entirely new creative journeys.
GIMIKS is one of the clearest examples of this phenomenon.
His artistic journey within the GU community eventually led to the creation of DUSTERGANGYO, an independent collection and universe of his own.
The important part is not that DUSTERGANGYO belongs to Genuine Undead.
It doesn't.
The important part is that a creator connected to the GU ecosystem was able to develop his own identity and build something independently.
That is what an incubator does.

Markus Manson represents another distinctive artistic voice that emerged from the GU community.
His work illustrates the creative diversity that developed around Genuine Undead: there is no requirement to reproduce the original GU aesthetic.
The community provides the environment.
The artist decides what to do with it.
Markus Manson created the art for @UndeadzOfficial, a cartoon-styled reinterpretation of the Genuine Undead - another example of the same aesthetic taking on an entirely different visual identity in someone else's hands.
Undeadz
Undeadz is the fun and cartoon-inspired counterpart to Genuine Undead. Born from the culture and mythology of the 9,999 Genuine Undead, originally created by an anonymous artist, Undeadz takes the iconic skeleton archetype of GU and brings it into a completely different artistic universe.
An initiative of Maison (@tMAIS0N), with art by Markus Manson (@markusmanson), Undeadz transforms the mysterious and sometimes darker spirit of Genuine Undead into something more playful, expressive and immediately approachable.
The familiar Undead DNA remains - the skeletons, the attitude, the characters and the sense of belonging - but everything is reimagined through a bold cartoon language, full of personality, humour and energy.
If Genuine Undead is the mysterious original universe, Undeadz is its mischievous alter ego.
With the introduction of Smart Contract V3, this relationship became tangible on-chain: every Genuine Undead holder has an Undeadz 1/1 attached to their Genuine Undead, creating a direct artistic connection between the original collection and its playful counterpart.
Undeadz is therefore not simply a separate collection inspired by GU; it becomes another layer of identity attached to the Undead each collector already owns.
It is not an attempt to replace or reproduce the original collection, but a celebration of what happens when an iconic cultural language is passed to another artist and allowed to evolve.
From the anonymous artist who created Genuine Undead to Markus Manson's distinctive cartoon interpretation, Undeadz illustrates one of the most powerful ideas within the GU ecosystem: great art can inspire new art, and an iconic character can acquire an entirely new life in someone else's hands.
Unicode began creating Genuine Undead fan art and gradually became one of the recognised creative voices within the wider GU ecosystem.
His trajectory is a powerful example of how experimentation inside a community can become a professional artistic practice.
What starts as fan art can become a signature style.
What starts as participation can become a career.
Sygo - Layne the Nihon Warrior
Sygo pushed experimentation into an entirely different direction with Layne the Nihon Warrior.
Through Layne, @Sygo__ developed an original character and universe combining visual art, storytelling, film ambitions and experimental AI creations.
The project represents the kind of creative experimentation that has always been part of the GU culture: combining different technologies and mediums to create something that did not previously exist.
Layne is not simply a Genuine Undead character.
It is an independent universe born from a creator who developed within this broader creative ecosystem.
Shepherd Vito - Not Dead 1974
Shepherd Vito is the creator of @notdead1974, another independent collection connected to the creative energy surrounding Genuine Undead - built entirely from handmade artwork.
Like the other examples, it demonstrates how the community can become a springboard for new artistic identities and new universes.
Haitian-American artist who creates pixel art, glitch work and animations, and also produces house music and beats (album Retrologik). An OG of Genuine Undead since 2022, he regularly made fan art and animations for the community. Active on Tezos and Ethereum, he is also developing physical works.
Coso - Undead Chef
Coso took inspiration from Genuine Undead and transformed it into Undead Chef, creating an independent collection and artistic universe.
Again, the significance is not that it is simply another GU project.
It demonstrates the opposite:
GU can inspire creators to leave the boundaries of the original collection and create worlds of their own.
Herb - DrGrinspooon
Herb, known as @DrGrinspooon, is another artist connected to the wider Genuine Undead creative community.
His work adds to the diversity of voices that have emerged around GU and reinforces an important characteristic of the ecosystem:
there is no single definition of what a GU artist should look like.
Different artists can develop completely different styles while sharing the same cultural roots.

The Genuine Undead collection brings together 9999 NFTs split into three categories: 8 Legendaries, 3996 Cyberpunks and 5995 Classics.
The 8 Legendary pieces each carry a strong, symbolic name: Nature, Faith, Strength, Love, Power, Life, War and Chaos.
Aside from the Legendaries, every character belongs either to the Classic category or to the Cyberpunk category. The rule is strict: there is no mixing of traits within a single character. If a Cyber trait is present, then all of that character's traits (with the exception of the background and the Type) belong to the Cyber universe. Conversely, a Classic character wears only Classic traits.
The distinction between Classic and Cyberpunk is first and foremost determined by the character's Type, among the 13 existing Types.

The cyberpunk movement is an influential subgenre of science fiction that explores a dystopian future marked by advanced technology, cybernetics and the unchecked power of corporations. It highlights the darker side of human nature and the consequences of unchecked technological progress.
Cyberpunk worlds are characterized by a stark contrast between cutting-edge technology and a degraded quality of life for most of the population. In these high-tech, low-life worlds, advanced technology has given rise to a corrupt and totalitarian society. Social inequality, widespread invasion of privacy and corporate greed create a climate of social unrest and rebellion.
The typical hero of a cyberpunk story is often an outcast, operating on the fringes of society, who battles the oppressive forces of dominant institutions. The genre features cybernetically augmented characters who use their special abilities to fight back. The fusion of human and machine explores the implications of artificial intelligence, cybernetics and biotechnology on human identity and society.
Cyberpunk has inspired numerous iconic films, such as Blade Runner and The Matrix, as well as video games like Deus Ex and Cyberpunk 2077, all known for their immersive, neon-lit worlds and complex characters.

Headwear and Tops are rounded out on the Cyberpunk side by, respectively, 23 Cyber traits out of the 54 total Headwear traits (alongside the 31 Classic ones), and 22 Cyber traits out of the 52 total Top traits (alongside the 30 Classic ones). Among the most distinctive Cyberpunk Tops are the armors, including the Secret Agent.
Two traits carry the word "cyber" explicitly in their name: Halfface Cyberware and Cyberpsycho.
The Lou and Roy Types share a rivalry that goes beyond a simple contrast of colors: it symbolizes the clash between old and new, between past and future, between Classic and Cyberpunk.
Finally, the 3T trait illustrates a striking cross-category rarity: of the 260 characters wearing this trait, only 14 are Cyberpunk - just 5% of them.

Genuine Undead has existed on three different smart contracts. That's not a red flag - it's the direct result of an anonymous artist stepping away early and leaving the collection's technical future entirely to its community, exactly as described in the founder's own statements (see "3 Statements"). Every migration since has been a community decision, executed in the open, never by the artist.
Why migrate at all? The original 2022 contract (5,995 classic, 3,996 cyberpunk and 8 legendary Genuine Undead - 9,999 in total) was never designed to hold the art fully on-chain. With no artist left to maintain infrastructure, the community took on that engineering work itself: first with Genuine Rising in 2024 (V2), then with the current V3 contract, the one the GU³ cube reads directly from.
The phases. Genuine Rising was proposed at the first community townhall in April 2024, its contract signed the following month, and it went live that September - the collection's first move toward being verifiably on-chain. Migration to V3 continued through 2025, with a free migration window that closed on January 18th, 2026 at over 58% migrated and thousands more moving across in the weeks around that deadline. The remainder has continued migrating through 2026, alongside the cube's own August 2026 launch.
One collection, unified. Across GU Origin, Genuine Rising and V3, trading volume for Genuine Undead now totals more than 15,000 ETH - a single continuous history, even though the tokens have changed addresses twice. Every wallet that held on GU Origin or Genuine Rising has a matching claim on V3; nothing was left behind, and nothing was reissued at the artist's discretion, because the artist was never involved.

There is another way to read the Legendaries.
Not as eight characters.
Not as eight rare NFTs.
But as eight forces that shape human existence.
Nature reminds us that we belong to something larger.
Life reminds us to continue.
Love gives us something worth protecting.
Faith allows us to move without certainty.
Strength allows us to endure.
Power gives us agency.
War reveals what happens when power becomes conflict.

That may be the deepest philosophy behind Genuine Undead:
The art was created by one.
The meaning belongs to many.
And the idea can outlive them all.

Split into two groups of four, they encode the numbers 1 and 7: G is the 7th letter of the alphabet, U the 6th in reverse, together pointing to 1776 - the year the ideas of the Enlightenment were put into practice and human civilization entered a new era.

Nature does not ask to be understood.

Before us, there was Nature.
After us, there will still be Nature.
It creates without permission, destroys without hatred and transforms without regret. Nothing escapes its cycles. Everything returns to something else.
The Undead exist in that contradiction: between what should have ended and what refuses to disappear.
Perhaps that is why Nature is not simply one of the forces of the collection.
It is the ground beneath all of them.
We build cities, systems, institutions and empires and convince ourselves that they will last.
Nature quietly reminds us otherwise.
Yet Nature is not merely destruction.
From decay comes soil.
From silence comes growth.
From death comes another beginning.
Everything changes.
Nothing truly disappears.
Love is the force that makes us care about something beyond ourselves.
It is irrational.
It cannot be calculated.
It cannot be commanded.
And yet, throughout human history, people have crossed oceans, built civilizations, sacrificed everything and created art that outlived them - because they loved something enough to do so.
Love is vulnerability, but it is also resistance.
Because to love something in a world that constantly tells us to consume, discard and move on is an act of defiance.
Love is what gives art its life.
An artist may create the work, but it is the person who cares for it, returns to it, protects it and gives meaning to it who keeps it alive.
That is the paradox of Genuine Undead.
Art can be created by one person.
But it lives through the people who love it.
Today, Love carries another chapter of that story.
The legendary 1/1 became part of the collection of Adam Weitsman, industrialist, restaurateur, entrepreneur and philanthropist, after the Genuine Undead community played a meaningful role in the acquisition.
Its journey is therefore almost poetic:
Love was once traded for War.
War was destroyed.
Love remained.
And perhaps that is the only ending Love ever needed.
War is what happens when power forgets that other people are human.
It is conflict made physical.
Ambition made violent.
Ideology turned into blood.
War is one of humanity's oldest expressions of power - and one of its oldest failures.
But within Genuine Undead, War acquired another meaning.
In September 2022, the legendary War was exchanged for Love and subsequently burned by its collector. The act was intentional: the collector wanted to express the idea that no one should own War, while Love should remain. The event became one of the defining pieces of Genuine Undead lore and an example of art being expressed through blockchain transactions themselves.
The irony is profound.
The only way to permanently remove War from the collection was to destroy it.
And so the 1/1 that represented destruction became itself an act of destruction - transforming the concept into the message.
War is gone.
The idea remains.
Its absence is part of its meaning.
Sometimes the most powerful artwork is the one that no longer exists.
The burning of War
On the third day of September, while the whole world still bore the weight of a real war, two men exchanged on the blockchain what no collector should ever have dared to touch: Love for War. Skel, who already held Chaos, Faith and Strength, bought War for eight ether, not to possess it, but to offer it to the void. Veryserious, who felt a dark energy in that pixel, surrendered the piece and received Love in return, as one receives a grace. Then, at dawn on the fourth day, while the community was still speaking in the hush of a Spaces, Skel sent War to a dead address, irreversible, an abyss from which nothing returns. It was no longer a JPEG being burned; it was a symbol being abolished: no one should own war. He had chosen Love on purpose, so that only Love would remain. And on the blockchain, eternal and cold, that mad and magnificent gesture stayed engraved: War is dead. Love has conquered.
Life is not the opposite of death.
Life is what happens in defiance of it.
Every living thing exists under the shadow of an ending.
Yet life continues.
It grows where it was not expected to grow.
It adapts.
It mutates.
It begins again.
The Undead embody this paradox perfectly.
They are not alive because death never reached them.
They are alive because death did not have the final word.
This is the deeper meaning of rebirth.
It is not returning to what existed before.
It is becoming something new after the old form has ended.
A person can disappear.
An artist can disappear.
A movement can disappear.
A community can disappear.
But an idea can cross from one mind into another.
And in doing so, it acquires another life.
Life is not permanence.
Life is transmission.
Faith begins at the edge of certainty.
You cannot prove the future.
You cannot know whether the thing you are building will survive.
You cannot know whether anyone will understand what you see.
And yet, you begin.
Every act of creation contains a small act of faith.
The artist who spends six months moving a single pixel believes the final image will be worth the sacrifice.
The collector who sees something before the crowd believes that meaning can exist before consensus.
The community that continues when the world has moved on believes that what it built deserves another chance.
Faith is not certainty.
Faith is action without certainty.
It is the decision to keep walking when the destination cannot yet be seen.
And sometimes, that is how impossible things become real.
Power is the ability to determine what happens next.
For most of human history, power has belonged to those who control institutions, resources, information or other people.
But there is another kind of power.
The power of an individual to act.
To create.
To refuse.
To question.
To organize.
To say no.
The artist's vision behind Genuine Undead repeatedly returns to this tension: centralized systems can become oppressive when individuals are stripped of agency. Decentralization, in this philosophy, is not anarchy for its own sake. It is about giving more people the ability to participate, initiate and contribute from within themselves.
That is why the Undead are more than skeletons.
They are symbols.
Power is not only the ability to control others.
It is the ability to remain sovereign over yourself.
And the greatest power of an idea is that no authority can completely confiscate it.
Strength is not the absence of weakness.
It is the refusal to surrender to it.
The world constantly tests what we are willing to abandon.
Our convictions.
Our creations.
Our communities.
Our dreams.
Sometimes strength is loud.
But more often, it is invisible.
It is the artist waking up early and going to sleep late because one pixel still feels wrong.
It is the collector who continues to believe when the attention has disappeared.
It is the community member who keeps building when nobody is watching.
The Genuine Undead artist described spending six months with a 24×24 canvas, moving pixels one by one to make the image coherent.
That discipline is part of the meaning of the skeleton itself.
The flesh is stripped away.
What remains is the essential structure.
Strength is what remains when everything unnecessary has been removed.
And perhaps that is why the Undead endure.
They do not survive because they are invincible.
They survive because they refuse to disappear.
Chaos is not the opposite of creation.
It is the space in which creation becomes possible.
Before an idea becomes a structure, it is uncertain.
Before a movement becomes a community, it is chaotic.
Before an artist discovers a language, there are experiments, failures and accidents.
Chaos breaks patterns.
It disrupts certainty.
It forces us to confront the possibility that the future may not resemble the past.
That can be frightening.
But it can also be liberating.
Because once the old order stops dictating what is possible, something new can emerge.
This is why Chaos belongs among the eight.
Not because destruction is inherently valuable.
But because creation requires the freedom to disturb what already exists.
